Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis to Star in Disney’s ‘Freakier Friday’ Sequel

Disney has revealed that Nisha Ganatra‘s Freakier Friday—its sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday—will premiere on August 8, 2025, again starring Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess Coleman.

Back in June, It was learned that Chad Michael Murray would again be appearing in the role of Jake. Other cast members who will appear in Freakier Friday include Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson, who will portray Maddie and Peg respectively. In addition, Tess’s husband Ryan will be played by Mark Harmon, and the two Chinese restaurant owners Pei-Pei and her mother will be played by Rosalind Chao and Lucille Soong. Stephen Tobotowsky will portray the role of Anna’s teacher, Mr. Bates.

Though few details are known about the plot, Disney had revealed in a June press release that the 2025 production would provide a “multigenerational twist”, noting that the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”

The 2003 Freaky Friday movie, directed by Mark Waters, was based on an eponymous 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers. (An earlier film adaptation had appeared in 1976, followed by a made-for-television version in 1995.)  Freakier producer Andrew Gunn had originally hoped to cast Jodie Foster in the role of the mother, but she declined.

Back in 2003, Annette Bening had been cast to play the role of Tess Coleman, but she withdrew six days before filming was scheduled to commence. Jamie Lee Curtis told an interviewer back then that she was reluctant to take on the part: “I was telling interviewers I was 44, a little chubby, my hair was grey, I was refusing to dye it, and I was content with my life. In this business, I’ve always known there’s a point at which the best thing to do is gently back out of the door.”

But Curtis changed her mind and decided to dye her hair gray and learn to play the guitar to appear in Freakier Friday. She explained her rationale by saying “Shows what can happen when you let go and let yourself feel liberated.”

Describing the upcoming sequel as a “love letter to mommies,” Curtis spoke of the emotions involved in her new project: “You now have a grandparent and a grandchild. We can’t tell you much, but Lindsay has her own 15-year-old in the movie, which makes me, then, the grandma. So there’s just more emotion.”
