Lucasfilm Confirms that ‘Lando’ Is Headed to the Big Screen

Lucasfilm has confirmed that its Lando project is being turned into a film, according to Variety. It had originally been slated as a television series only. The project by Donald and Stephen Glover is based on the Star Wars character Lando Calrissian.

On Thursday, Stephen Glover had declared on the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out: “It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie.” But Glover also acknowledged that the project would likely be delayed due to the ongoing strikes involving writers and actors.

The news represents yet another development in the evolution of the Lando production. In late 2020, it had been reported that Justin Simien of Haunted Mansion fame was attached to the project. By the summer of 2023, it was confirmed that the Glover brothers would be writing and developing it instead, with the aim of making it into a Disney+ series. And in April of this year, Donald Glover confirmed he was considering reprising the role he’d played in 2018, with Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The character of Lando Calrissian had been originated by Billy Dee Williams in the 1980 film Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. He reprised the role in Return of the Jedi (1983) and in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Describing the Lando character as “charm incarnate,” Donald Glover added that “He’s kind of a maverick, which I don’t think there’s a lot of anymore. It’s hard to be the smooth talker nowadays. Where’s the line? That’s also where the danger is. How close can you get without tripping over it?”

Continuing, the actor said, “The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”

Stephen Glover added that the brothers are committed to a high-quality production. As he explained to Torre: “Everything that’s worth doing has some risk to it, especially when you care about the quality of things. That’s a big part of us. We don’t want to do things that are just going to be mediocre, like ‘Eh, they came, they went. That was fine enough.’”
