Janus Films has unveiled its official trailer for Lav Diaz’s new movie, “Magellan“, which also made its debut at Cannes.
The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan attempted to sail across the vast Pacific Ocean while leading a fleet of ships to Southeast Asia at the dawn of the modern era. The crew was driven to madness upon reaching the Malay Archipelago because of the harshness of the high seas and the overwhelming natural beauty of the islands.
“Magellan” is an epic that spans the globe and depicts the colonization of the Philippines as a primal, shocking encounter with the unknown, which is a radical retelling of European stories of discovery and exploration.
The cast includes Gael García Bernal as Magellan, Ângela Azevedo as Beatriz, Ronnie Lazaro as Rajah Humabon, Hazel Orencio as Juana, Amado Arjay Babon as Enrique de Malaca, Tomás Alves as Francisco Serrão, Bong Cabrera as Rajah Colambu, and Dario Yazbek Bernal as Duarte Barbosa.
The film, directed and written by Diaz, is set to premiere in cinemas in New York and Los Angeles on January 9th.
