According to record producer Clive Davis, Meryl Streep will play the role of Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe’s upcoming biopic about the iconic singer. Streep had been rumored to be starring in the film since last summer, when it was also reported that Anya Taylor-Joy would be playing the younger Mitchell.
In October, Crowe had told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that the biopic would be taking a “really personal” look at Mitchell and her music, declaring that “We’ve been working on [the film] for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out,”
Rumors about Streep’s casting first surfaced in July 2024, with the Oscar-winning actress playing an older version of Mitchell in the film. It was later rumored that Anya Taylor-Joy would be portraying the singer in her younger days.
The 82-year-old Mitchell is best known for hit songs such as “Both Sides, Now”, “Big Yellow Taxi”, and “Blue.” At yesterday’s Grammy Awards ceremony she won the prize for Best Historical Album, her eleventh Grammy. She was presented with a lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2002.
Over the years, Streep demonstrated her versatility by playing a British prime minister in The Iron Lady, a singer-turned-hotelier in Mamma Mia!, and a celebrated fashion designer in The Devil Wears Prada.
Crowe’s film credits include his autobiographical Almost Famous, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. He also directed Vanilla Sky, Elizabethtown, and Aloha, as well as the music documentaries Pearl Jam Twenty and The Union. Crowe is also known for his music journalism as a contributing writer to Rolling Stone magazine.
