Mia Goth is set to make her Marvel Cinematic Universe acting debut in the upcoming reboot of the Blade film franchise. The Independent Spirit Award-nominated actress will star alongside two-time Oscar-winning actor, Mahershala Ali, Deadline is reporting.
Yann Demange, the director known for Lovecraft Country, is set to helm the upcoming movie. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is producing Blade.
Ali will take over the titular role from Wesley Snipes, who played the vampire hunter in the original film trilogy. The latter actor’s Blade series was released between the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Plans for a new big screen incarnation of the Blade character were first revealed during Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. The new Blade movie is set to be released on September 6, 2024, and is expected to shoot in Atlanta.
Michael Starrbury is writing the script for the new installment in the Blade film series. The movie’s plot details and story, as well as which character Goth will be playing, have not yet been announced.
Blade was created as a supporting character by comic book writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan. The vampire hunter first appeared in Tomb of Dracula No. 10 in 1973. After his introduction, he became a cult favorite.
The character became known for being a human-vampire hybrid, due to his human mother was bitten and killed by a vampire during childbirth. Blade spends his time hunting vampires to avenge his mother’s death.
Goth will appear in the horror side of the MCU after she garnered acclaim and numerous nominations in the genre last year when she starred in the ensemble cast of X and as the lead of its prequel, Pearl. Goth played the titular Pearl character in both films, as well as Maxine in the franchise’s initial installment
The slasher features, which were released by A24, were penned, directed, produced and edited by acclaimed genre filmmaker, Ti West. Goth also co-scribed the series’ origin story with the filmmaker. The duo are also preparing to start shooting the third and final installment in the X trilogy, MaXXXine. The upcoming movie, which will serve as a sequel to the franchise’s initial entry, is expected to be released later this year.
Besides X and Pearl, the actess also earned strong reviews for her performance in writer-helmer Brandon Cronenberg’s sci-fi horror film, Infinity Pool. The drama garnered critical acclaim when it premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Besides Blade, Goth is also in talks to appear in another horror-driven movie, Frankenstein. The film, which is set to stream on Netflix, will also star Oscar Isaac and Andrew Garfield.
