Netflix will soon start filming the second season of its highly popular One Piece anime in South Africa, but it’s unclear how many episodes that would include, or whether the streamer plans to move ahead with a third season.
The confusion arose when actor Brashaad Mayweather was quoted in an interview with ComicBook.com as saying, “Hopefully we’ll see if they flashback to it because they’re filming two seasons – season two and three – back to back starting soon. So we’ll see what happens.”
He later clarified his statement by noting that he was only speculating about the production schedule and that Netflix had not yet made a decision about plans for a third season. In the opening episodes, Mayweather played the role of Patty, one of the cooks at the Baratie restaurant.
However, series editor Eric Litman was quoted as saying he had read some of the scripts for season two, revealing that “I am pretty excited about where things are going. I don’t want to say too much. There are some pretty cool powers coming.”
The first season of One Piece dealt with the East Blue saga, and the second season will focus on the Arabasta saga. As described in the show’s official synopsis: “As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But Luffy’s life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…”
When it was released on Netflix in 2023, One Piece attracted some 18.5 million viewers in its first week, racking up a total of 140 million hours. The live-action adaptation is based on a script penned by Eiichiro Oda. It stars Iñaki Godoy as pirate captain Monkey D. Luffey. Other cast members include Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero, and Taz Skylar.
