Mavens of the macabre will have to wait until Friday the 27th of February, 2026 to watch the seventh installment in the Scream franchise. It will be the 30th anniversary of the series, which has been chilling audiences since 1996.
According to Paramount Pictures, Scream 7, Neve Campbell will be returning in her role as Sidney Prescott. The upcoming film will directed by Kevin Williamson and written by Guy Busick, who contributed his screenwriting talents to Scream VI and to the soft reboot of Scream in 2022. Director Williamson had written three installments in the series: the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4.
Campbell had appeared in earlier installments but did not appear in Scream VI owing to a salary dispute. She was quoted by People as saying: “Those movies have been such a big part of my life and it means so much to me, and I was sad to miss the last one, to not be a part of it. I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot.” As she warned in an Instagram post, “It’s gonna be a killer 2026.”
Courtney Cox is reportedly negotiating her return as ace reporter Gale Weathers, but she told Variety that a deal hasn’t been sealed yet.
The road to Scream 7 has been controversial. Two of Scream’s principals, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, will no longer be participating in the upcoming film: Ortega had scheduling conflicts with her role in Netflix’s Wednesday and Barrera was sacked by Spyglass Media Group for social media comments that slammed the Israeli stance in its current war with Hamas. When Christopher Landon exited the project in 2023, he describe it “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild strikes also threw a wrench into production schedules.
James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein will be producing the upcoming installment, with Radio Silence listed as executive producers for Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media.
No further details were released about the full cast or plot for Scream 7. According to Campbell, filming is going to begin this December and continue through 2025.
