Netflix has unveiled data about the time users spent watching its titles, as well as how wide its global reach was, during the second half of 2023. The apocalyptic psychological thriller, Leave the World Behind, was the most-watched film, while the anime-inspired live action show One Piece led the television side, on the streamer worldwide, Variety is reporting.

The data comes from Netflix’s second edition of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report. The report highlights viewership on the streamer from July-December 2023. Subscribers across the world watched about 90 billion hours of content on Netflix during the time period, compared to 93 billion hours in the first half of the year.

Netflix released its first big data report, which covered the first half of 2023, last December. In the second report, which was released today, the company added runtime and views (total hours viewed divided by runtime). The streamer also separated movies and television series, syncing them up its weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists.

Leave the World Behind, which premiered Dec. 8, 2023, generated 121 million views in just over three weeks. The film, which was written and directed by Sam Esmail, is Netflix’s No. 5 most popular movie of all time.

The project was executive produced by former U.S. President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama of Higher Ground and produced by EsmailCorp and Red Om Films. It stars Julia Roberts, who also served as a producer, as well as Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold.

The movie racked up 121 million views in its first 24 days. It currently sits fifth among Netflix’s all-time top 10 English-language films, as measured by views over their first 13 weeks of release.

Heart of Stone, an action-thriller starring Gal Gadot, brought in nearly 110 million views in the second half of 2023. Adam Sandler’s Leo became the streamer’s biggest animated movie to date, as it generated 96 million views after it premiered on Nov. 11.

The Spanish survival thriller Nowhere was the most viewed non-English language Netflix film of 2023. It’s also the streamer’s third most popular non-English language movie of all time, having garnered 86 million views.

Among its television shows, One Piece topped Netflix during the second half of last year with nearly 72 million views. The fantasy adventure drama more than doubled viewing across Netflix’s anime film and series.

The news comes after the series had just a four-week run in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 in the United States. It totaled a little more than 64 million hours of viewing in that time.

The show, which is a live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, was followed by German limited series Dear Child (52.5 million views); British limited series Who Is Erin Carter? (50.1 million views); Lupin Part 3 (49.7 million), The Witcher Season 3 (47.9 million); and Sex Education Season 4 (46.3 million).
Overall, limited series were popular on Netflix during the second half of 2023. Including Dear Child and Who Is Erin Carter?, nine of the Top 20 titles during the six-month period were limited series.

Those projects included the docuseries Beckham (43.9 million views); the Taylor Kitsch opioid drama Painkiller (34.4 million views); the Mark Ruffalo WWII saga All the Light We Cannot See (33.9 million views); the South Korean rom-com King the Land (33.2 million views); the legal docuseries Depp v. Heard (31.7 million views); the Swedish thriller A Nearly Normal Family (28 million views); and the Mike Flanagan horror show based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher (27 million views).

In addition, according to Netflix’s analysis, the reality competition spin-off show Squid Game: The Challenge garnered 33 million views in the second half of 2023. The series helped increase viewership for the original Korean show Squid Game by 34%, three years after its premiere.

Licensed titles also continued to be popular on Netflix last year. Suits garnered 144 million views across nine seasons in the second half of 2023. It was followed by Young Sheldon (88 million views); Grey’s Anatomy (51 million); Gossip Girl (49 million); and Gilmore Girls (45 million).

The data report includes almost 16,000 titles, including 6,599 series and 9,395 movies, that streamed on Netflix from July 1-Dec. 31, 2023. As with the streamer’s first big data release, the latest report includes many titles that didn’t receive many viewing hours. About 5,200 titles had between 50,000 and 149,999 views (Netflix rounds to the nearest 100,000) in the six-month period, and about half of those also had under 150,000 hours of total viewing time.
