A live-action Pacific Rim TV series is now reportedly being developed at Prime Video as part of an arrangement between Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The upcoming series is being written and executive-produced by Eric Heisserer under his Chronology banner.
Pacific Rim will be the first title in the Chronology-Legendary series. No details about the plot has yet been released, but it has been reported that the show will serve as a prequel to later films. In the Pacific Rim series, a multidimensional rift has opened on the Pacific Ocean floor, unleashing an influx of monsters known as kaiju into the world. To combat the kaiju, humans deploy giant robots called Jaegers.
It’s been twelve years since the debut of the original film in the franchise, directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay he wrote with Travis Beacham. That film grossed more than $400 million worldwide. In 2018, a sequel titled Pacific Rim Uprising made its debut, written and directed by Steven S. Deknight. It was followed by an anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, which aired on Netflix in 2021 and 2022. The original Pacific Rim starred Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.
Eric Heisserer had previously served as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone TV series, as based on the Grishaverse young adult novels. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017 for Best Adapted Screenplay, for the film Arrival. He also racked up feature-writing credits for Bird Box, Lights Out, Hours, Bloodshot, and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
In a related development, Legendary TV and Amazon MGM Studios are collaborating with Pacesetter Productions in creating a series based on the Murdle murder-mystery puzzles by B. T. Karber. Legendary is also making Monarch, part of the live-action Monsterverse series for Apple TV+. Other shows being produced include Dune: Prophecy for Max and The Legend of Lara Croft, an animated series for Netflix.
