Walt Disney Studios announced today that award-winning actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge will appear with Harrison Ford in the fifth installment of the popular Indiana Jones franchise. Along with new cast member Bridge comes a familiar talent from the franchise, composer John Williams.
A press release from Disney celebrated that “Williams’ unforgettable Indy soundtracks, packed with all the epic thrills, suspense, romance and excitement that fans have come to expect from an Indiana Jones movie, have become as beloved and familiar as the adventurer-hero’s signature hat and whip.”
Raiders of the Lost Ark was released on June 12th, 1981, winning four Oscars and a special achievement award while also earning a nomination for Best Picture. Its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, bowed in 1984, followed by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which brought the beloved late Sean Connery into the mix, in 1989. The most recent installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, debuted in 2008.
Steven Spielberg directed all four films and, while he is remaining on board as a producer for the fifth entry, will hand over those duties to James Mangold, whose credits include Ford v Ferrari and Walk the Line. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will also serve as producers for the upcoming film, which is scheduled for a July 29th, 2022 theatrical release.
Mangold shared that he was “thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers.
Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine.
When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”
Waller-Bridge is best known for creating and starring in Fleabag, a dark comedy series that earned her Emmy Awards for acting, writing, and producing. Though she and Ford have yet to share the screen together, she did appear in a project that will forever be linked to Ford, the prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, as the droid L3-37.
