The upcoming fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be its last, as Prime Video has decided not to renew the drama, which stars John Krasinski in the titular role, for Season 5. However, the streaming service is considering expanding the universe of the hit action show with a potential spinoff series headlined by Michael Peña, Deadline is reporting.
Peña was cast to play another major character from Clancy’s Jack Ryan literary universe, Ding Chavez, in Season 4. The final season of the main political thriller series, which is executive produced by Krasinski, is currently filming.
While production on Jack Ryan‘s fourth season is currently underway, the main show’s final season and potential spinoff won’t be airing on Prime Video anytime soon. The streaming service has not yet set a Season 3 premiere date, so its final season is likely to air next year.
Krasinski reportedly committed to four seasons of Jack Ryan when he signed on to take over the famous eponymous role, which was previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine over the course of several films. In addition to starring and executive producing the spy thriller series, Krasinski has also been contributing to the project in a writing and showrunner-type capacity during its later seasons.
Peña will be introduced as Ding in the final episode of the main show’s upcoming third season before he joins the cast full-time in Season 4. Amazon announced the actor’s casting in the Season 4 pickup announcement in October, but at the time, didn’t reveal which character he will be playing.
Ding is a major character in the Ryanverse, as he joined the CIA right after he left the United States Army. He has gone on missions in several countries, including Colombia, Iran and the United Kingdom, where he acted as the executive officer of Rainbow Six.
The character has appeared in 22 novels from the Ryanverse, including The Sum of All Fears, Clear and Present Danger, Executive Orders, Debt of Honor, Command Authority, Full Force and Effect and Commander-in-Chief. He was portrayed by Raymond Cruz in the Clear and Present Danger feature adaptation.
Season 3 of Jack Ryan will follow the titular character as he goes on the run and in a race against time. Jack is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy, and as a result, suddenly becomes a fugitive. Now, wanted by both the CIA and an international rogue faction that he has uncovered, Jack is forced to go underground across Europe. His new mission is to try to stay alive and prevent a massive global conflict.
In addition to the Emmy Award-nominated Krasinski, the thriller’s third season will also feature such returning stars as Wendell Pierce as James Greer and Michael Kelly as Mike November. Season 3 will also feature Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright, James Cosmo as Luca, Peter Guinness as Petr, Nina Hoss as Alena and Alexej Manvelov as Alexei.
Jack Ryan is a co-production of Amazon Studios, Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television. Besides Krasinski, the drama is also executive produced by Andrew Form, Allyson Seeger, Krasinski, Vaun Wilmott, Brad Fuller and Michael Bay. Additionally, Tom Clancy and Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost executive produced the third season with Mace Neufeld and Carlton Cuse.
