Adele Lim has signed on to direct the anticipated third installment of the celebrated Princess Diaries franchise, Deadline is reporting. She will adapt a script that’s being written by The High Note scribe, Flora Greeson.

The filmmaker is reuniting with Disney on the comedy after she previously wrote the screenplay for its 2021 Oscar-nominated animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon. The second follow-up in the Princess Diaries series marks Lim’s sophomore helming effort; she made her directorial debut with the R-rated female Asian American comedy, Joy Ride, which was released by Lionsgate last year.

Debra Martin Chase, who originated the movie franchise, is set to produce Princess Diaries 3. Lim’s producing partner, Naia Cucukov, and Melissa Stack are serving as executive producers on the sequel.

Disney premiered the Princess Diaries movie series in 2001, which is based on Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name. The screen adaptation helped launch Anne Hathaway into a lasting A-list star.

The film was followed by its first follow-up, The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement, in 2004. Both installments also starred Julie Andrews and were helmed by the late Garry Marshall. Together both movies grossed $300M at the worldwide box office.

The first film followed Hathaway’s protagonist, Mia Thermopolis, as she learns she’s the heir apparent to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia while she’s in high school. She relies on her friends Lilly and Michael Moscovitz to help her navigate through her teenage angst as a new public figure.

Andrews played Mia’s grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi, who’s serving as Genovia’s Queen regent, in the first two movies. However, the Oscar-winning actress has said that she doesn’t think it makes sense for her to return for the third movie.

While discussing signing on to direct the next entry in the series, Lim told Deadline: “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Hathaway shared her excitement about the threequel on Instagram by posting Variety’s announcement of the news of Lim’s hiring. The Academy Award-winning actress paired the article with one of her most iconic quotes from the Princess Diaries series, “Shut up!”

Before commenting on the news of Lim joining the series, Hathaway shared her enthusiasm about Princess Diaries 3‘s progress in an interview with V Magazine. “We’re in a good place,” she said. “There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

Plot details haven’t been confirmed for the second Princess Diaries sequel, which has been in development since 2022. But the threequel is expected to continue the story from its two predecessors, rather than rebooting the series.

Besides Princess Diaries 3, Lim’s other credits include being a scribe and producer on such television shows as One Tree Hill and Lethal Weapon. She also served the co-showrunner on the CW series Star-Crossed.

The filmmaker also penning Warner Bros.’ blockbuster rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, which grossed $174M at the domestic box office. The movie, which was helmed by Jon Chu, was nominations for Best Picture at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild Awards, and won the Critics Choice Award.

Last year Lim partnered with Cucukov to form the production company 100 Tigers. The mission for the company is to “foster and empower artists and projects that share our passion for female-forward, cross-cultural stories with global appeal and a glossy edge.” 100 Tigers has several projects in development at various studios including Amazon/MGM, HBO Max and ABC.
