Maria, Pablo Larrain’s new biopic about opera diva Maria Callas, will begin production shortly with shoots in Paris, Budapest, Milan, and in the singer’s native Greece. Starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, the film is an independent production with an agreement from SAG-AFTRA allowing it to proceed at this time.

The script, which was completed before the Writers Guild strike, is by Steven Knight, who wrote the screenplay for Spencer, Larrain’s earlier film on Princess Diana.
According to the filmmakers, Maria will “explore the life of the legendary, iconic and controversial singer, often described as the original diva. Based on true accounts, Maria tells the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.”
In announcing his plans, The Chilean-born Larrain declared “I am incredibly excited to start production on Maria, which I hope will bring Maria Callas’ remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”
In addition to Jolie, the cast for Maria includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino. Larrain’s earlier film credits include biopics on Pablo Neruda, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Princess Diana. He recently premiered his dark comedy/horror film El Conde at the Venice Film Festival, which won him a best screenplay award.
Callas was known for her lavish fur costumes, which are being recreated for the biopic from Massimo Cantini Parrini’s archive collection.
