Coming off a major box office opening weekend debut, Ryan Gosling has signed on to star in an untitled sci-fi action comedy, Deadline is reporting. Oscar-winning filmmaking duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, will develop the upcoming feature.

Universal Pictures is developing the project. The studio will release the movie in theaters on November 19, 2027.

The comedy marks the Daniels’ long-awaited follow-up to their critically acclaimed absurdist dramedy, Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film became a cultural phenomenon. It swept the 2023 Academy Awards, winning seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. The movie also proved to be a massive commercial success, grossing $143 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.

The filmmakers plan to begin production on the new project this summer in Los Angeles. Kwan and Scheinert will produce the feature alongside longtime collaborator Jonathan Wang under their Playgrounds banner, part of an overall deal with Universal. Studio executives Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project.

The comedy’s plot details have not yet been revealed. But Kwan offered a glimpse into the film’s tone during an interview at SXSW, describing it as a “fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart” that leans into existential themes. He emphasized that the story aims to reflect the complexity and nuance of the modern world, noting that the lengthy development process stems from a desire to thoughtfully capture those ideas.

The movie is also expected to feature an ensemble cast of younger actors, potentially in the high school age range. This suggest there will be a blend of generational perspectives within the comedy’s narrative.

Gosling’s casting comes at a peak moment in his career. Amazon MGM Studios produced Project Hail Mary, which debuted at No. 1 globally this past weekend, March 20–22. The sci-fi action movie earned over $140 million, which set multiple records, including the biggest non-sequel March opening. The film has also become the highest-rated of Gosling’s career, fueling early awards season buzz.

The Golden Globe-winning actor is continuing his streak in the genre, with another major role lined up in Star Wars: Starfighter. Shawn Levy is directing the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise. The movie is scheduled for release in May 2027.

The announcement of Gosling joining the Daniels’ latest film also coincides with the release of The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist. Kwan and Wang are producing the project for filmmakers Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell. Focus Features is distributing the documentary in theaters today, March 27.

Meanwhile, there have also been hints around the potential expansions of the Project Hail Mary universe. There may be possible adaptations of author Andy Weir’s other works.

With Gosling attached to the Daniels’ return after one of the most celebrated films in recent memory, Universal’s untitled project already appears to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2027.
