‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Sequel in the Works

Bridge7 Productions may be working on a sequel to Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Best Picture, Slumdog Millionaire. Bridge7is founded by producer Swati Shetty and former agent Grant Kessman, the company has landed film and television rights to the property from production company Celador.

Dev Patel played Jamal, a young man from Mumbai’s slums who competes on India’s version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ in 2008. Of the ten nominations in total, the film won eight Oscars, with director Danny Boyle receiving one.

The film, which was only budgeted at $15 million, became a global sensation with a worldwide gross of $378.4 million and received a lot of praise.

Shetty brings 25 years of industry experience from Netflix, Imagine Entertainment and Disney. Her producer credits include Netflix rom-com Wedding Season and Umrika, which took home the audience award at Sundance in 2015. On the other hand, Kessman spent 20 years at CAA as a TV literary agent before relocating to London, where he worked on series including Monsieur Spade and the Gerard Butler-starring Paris Has Fallen.

Celador International chairman Paul Smith confirms in an official statement that a sequel is being planned and one that will explore “the next chapter of Jamal’s journey of discovery”.

Ken Davenport, a Tony-winning producer, acquired the rights to develop the film into a new musical, which is a separate transaction from this one.
