The renowned film maker Spike Lee is reportedly working on the comedic military drama movie “Liberty,” which he may direct or produce.
Deadline reported that the project is being pitched by military veterans and writers Rebecca Murga and Jalysa Conway, who will write the script. Don’t expect “Liberty” to have the same vibes as “Da 5 Bloods,” but the film is said to be similar to Hal Ashby’s 1973 Navy drama “The Last Detail‘”, which was nominated for an Oscar, and depicts a group of cadets on a wild night in New York City.
Lee, Murga, and Conway are working on the second project. The first one is a drama series that revolves around the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) from Amazon. Marriagea’s writing credits include ABC’s “Will Trent” and Apple TV+ series “Swagger” while Conway has worked as a supervising producer and writer on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
Lee and Steven Jackson will produce through their 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks label. Lee most recently filmed “Highest 2 Lowest,” a Denzel Washington-led crime thriller remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic “High and Low”.
Other recent work for Lee beyond “Da 5 Bloods” includes 2018’s “BlacKKKlansman,” which won the director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
There is no information on where “Liberty” will be released by studios, but if Lee directs it, everyone in Hollywood will compete for it except for him, Murga, and Conway.
