After a decade of hiatus from his last film, “The Wind Rises,” a Legendary Japanese animator Hayako Miyazaki is returning to the director’s chair with “How Do You Live,” Studio Ghibli announced.The feature-length film is set to open in theaters in Japan on July 14 next year.
Miyazaki and his team have been tackling this project for some time; when Miyazaki came out of retirement to lead the project, which was first announced in 2017, following the release of “The Wind Rises,” which was initially expected to be his final film. It’s an adaptation of a 1937 novel of the same name written by Yoshino Genzaburō, which tells the story of a 15-year-old boy as he goes on a journey to discovery spiritual growth, poverty and the meaning of life with the help of his uncle, whose advice is communicated to him from a journal.
Ghibli’s producer, Toshio Suzuki said to Entertainment Weekly in 2020, “We are only able to come up with one minute of animation in a month. That means 12 months a year, you get 12 minutes worth of movie. Actually, we’ve been working on this film for three years, so that means we have 36 minutes completed so far. We’re hoping it will finish in the next three years.”
Earlier this year, Miyazaki’s films like “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Spirited Away” was listed on the 100 greatest films of all time from the Sight and Sound Magazine.
