Despite persistent rumors that Sydney Sweeney is a likely candidate to play a starring role in the next James Bond film, published reports are now casting doubt on such a possibility.

According to TMZ, Sweeney is not engaged in talks with Amazon MGM Studios about her potential role in the Bond franchise, though she is connected with other projects with the studio. These projects include Split Fiction, a film directed by Jon M. Chu based on a video game, as well as a lingerie brand spearheaded by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez via Coatue, their venture-capital entity.

Amazon, of course, Is headed by Bezos, and it is Amazon MGM Studios that now owns the rights to the James Bond franchise. Rumors of Sweeney’s participation were fueled by the star’s appearance at the Bezos-Sanchez gala wedding in Italy last month, and by her friendship with Denis Villeneuve, who directed Dune.

An earlier report had claimed that Sydney Sweeney was the “top name on the casting sheet for Bond” It added that “Denis believes she is hugely talented, as well as having an alluring appeal to younger generations, vital in modernising the franchise.”

Another reason for downplaying speculation about who the new “Bond girl” might be, say observers, is the fact that an actor has not yet been found to replace Daniel Craig in the all-important role of 007 himself.

The 27-year-old Sydney Bernice Sweeney first came to widespread attention in 2018 when she appeared in various television series, including Everything Sucks!, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Sharp Objects. In 2019, she played a small part in Quentin Tarentino’s film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She also appeared in HBO’s Euphoria and in The White Lotus series. Sweeney also starred in the romantic comedy Anyone but You and in the superhero film Madame Web.
