Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Amazon MGM Studios are reportedly in talks to produce a biopic about legendary golfer Tiger Woods. Considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, Woods famously captured four of the top professional golf titles, an accomplishment known as the “Tiger Slam.” This and other of his accomplishments landed him in the World Golf Hall of Fame. He became the first Black golfer to achieve some of these awards.
It’s likely that Reinaldo Marcus Green (of King Richard fame) will be directing the upcoming Tiger Woods biopic. Winkler Films is also participating in the development process with Higher Ground and Amazon MGM.
The biopic will be based on Kevin Cook’s book The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played, a title derived from the fact that Woods had famously captured four of the top professional golf titles during his storied career, even while battling personal demons such as marital infidelity and the loss of his father. He was arrested in 2017 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and he was seriously injured in an automobile accident in 2021. Over the course of his career, Woods underwent a number of health challenges, including back surgeries.
News about the potential deal with Higher Ground Productions was broken by The Hollywood Reporter, which also called attention to Tiger Woods’s earlier connections with the Obamas. As part of the Obama inauguration festivities in 2009, Woods gave a speech at the Lincoln Memorial in tribute to the military. Later that year, he was invited to the White House for a special tour.
The Obamas’ production company has given its imprint to several notable films, including George C. Wolfe’s Rustin, about civil-rights activist Bayard Rustin and Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, an apocalyptic thriller about the breakdown of technology that is typically taken for granted in today’s culture.
