Some eight years after the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Paul Feig has been selected to direct the third installment in the Mamma Mia film series for Universal Pictures. Mona Fastvoid had reportedly been hoping to direct the new ABBA film after her recent work on The Testament of Ann Lee.

The two earlier films about the Swedish pop group ABBA were financial successes: the first one earned $610 million from a $52 million budget while the second one grossed $402 million from a $75 million budget.

It’s still unclear whether Meryl Streep, whose character Donna died in the second film, will have a role in the upcoming sequel, or exactly when Abba fans will be enjoying the proposed movie. Amanda Seyfried, who played the role of Sophie in the first two movies, has hinted that Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney could join the cast, possibly playing members of Sophie’s family.

Feig’s earlier films included Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy. However, his most recent offerings—Last Christmas, The School for Good and Evil, Jackpot, and Another Simple Favor, were not well-received by the critics. Feig is filming a sequel to The Housemaid this spring and is also working on a third A Simple Favor film
.
According to an article in The Movie Blog this week, ““The studio’s involvement signals that the film will receive a wide release and a strong marketing push. With Feig’s comedic touch and the original cast’s enthusiasm, the sequel promises fresh songs, vibrant dance numbers, and new story twists. Industry insiders say the film will explore Sophie’s next chapter while honoring the legacy of the first two movies. Expect a mix of classic ABBA hits and new tracks tailored to the evolving characters. …

“Overall, the combination of Feig’s direction, a supportive cast and Universal’s backing creates a strong foundation for Mamma Mia 3. The film is set to revive the joyous spirit that made the original a cultural phenomenon.”
