Warner Bros. Discovery will be reviving the Gremlins franchise with Gremlins 3, a new sequel scheduled for theatrical release on November 19, 1927, according to David Zaslav, the studio’s CEO and president.
Zaslav told investors this week that Steven Spielberg will be returning as executive producer of the upcoming production, which will be directed and produced by Chris Columbus of Harry Potter fame. The screenplay will be written by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.
Columbus wrote the original screenplay for Gremlins, a horror-comedy that made its debut in 1984, directed by Joe Dante. It told the story of a young boy named Billy who receives a Mogwai as a pet, only to have the cute, furry creature wreak havoc during the Christmas season when the boy fails to follow instructions about caring for the animal. The film was a financial success that earned $212 million at the global box office. Its 1990 Sequel, Gremlins 2, took in a more modest $41 million but remains a cult classic.
On the heels of Zaslav’s announcement, Jesse Ehrman, the president of development and production at Warner Bros., declared that “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as ‘Gremlins,’ and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
In his call to investors this week, Zaslav boasted that “We’re leading the 2025 box office domestically. We’re leading it internationally, and we’re leading it globally. Not only are we in first place, but we’re the only film studio to have crossed $4 billion in 2025 box office revenue thus far, and we’ve done it with a significant amount of original stories …”
To drive home his point, Zaslav cited other offerings, including Minecraft, Superman, and Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie, the latter of which Warner Bros. distributed for Apple, as well as Sinners, Weapons, and Conjuring.
“In Q3 alone, we successfully launched a new era for the DC studios with ‘Superman,’ chortled Zaslav. “We showed our exceptional horror genre expertise yet again with ‘Weapons’ and ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites,’ which have together grossed more than $750 million in ticket sales. And we reinforced our commitment to producing great original works by great filmmakers, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another.’”
As Chris Columbus told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m filled with a tremendous surge of inspiration and passion as I embark on this cinematic journey. It’s an honor to reunite with Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros., as we bring this latest chapter of Gremlins to a brand new generation of moviegoers who will experience all of the thrills of this grand adventure on the big screen”
