Austin Butler is about to begin his Tour de France, portraying Lance Armstrong, the racing legend who lost his reputation due to a doping scandal. Edward Berger, who directed “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Conclave,” is set to direct a new film with the “Elvis” star playing the part of the cyclist.
Scott Stuber, the former Netflix film chief who moved to United Artists, is currently in charge of producing the film, which has resulted in a bidding war between major studios and streaming services.
Stuber has a first-look agreement with Amazon-owned United Artists, but the project was developed before he signed the contract, resulting in the rights being available for purchase.
“King Richard” scribe Zach Baylin is penning the spec, with Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbit producing along with Berger. Josh Glick and Zac Frognowski will serve as Executive Producers alongside Baylin.
Ben Foster was cast as the road racing cyclist in “The Program,” a drama that was not widely seen when it premiered in 2015.
