Filmmaker Edgar Wright has confirmed reports that a script has been completed for Baby Driver 2, a sequel to his acclaimed action thriller, Baby Driver, which was released in 2017. But Wright is still unsure when the film will go into production.

As he remarked on The Discourse podcast: “There is a script for Baby Driver 2. That is something that actually exists. But most filmmaking depends on factors beyond you — timing, financing, who’s available. You’re not always completely in control of those things.”

Wright reminded his listeners that “The development process is a long one, and some things go and some things don’t. People don’t always understand that not all directors are completely in control of what order things get made in.”

For one thing, two of the stars of the 2017 Baby Driver film, Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey, may not be available to reprise their roles due to personal issues. Other cast members included Jon Bernthal, Jamie Foxx, Eiza Gonzelez, and Jon Hamm.

In The Discourse podcast, Wright also attempted to squelch rumors that he and Simon Pegg were developing a film inspired by the Coen Brothers. “I didn’t hear about that,” he declared, adding ‘Where did the Coen Brothers thing come from?” Wright suggested that the rumor stemmed from a stray comment that was misinterpreted and took on a life of its own.

The original Baby Driver movie grossed $227 million on a $34 million budget. Other of Wright’s commercially successful films include The Adventures of Tintin, which grossed $374 million, and Ant-Man, clocking in at $519 million. His 2019 production of Last Night in Soho, however, garnered less-than-enthusiastic reviews by the critics.

Wright’s next project is still unclear, though it’s been speculated that he may work on a remake of Barbarella starring Sydney Sweeney. On Tuesday, he presided over a private screening of his latest film, The Running Man, at Paramount.
