In the latest installment of “Above the Line vs. Below the Line,” film critics Matthew Schuchman and Edward Douglas discuss Robert Eggers’ new remake of Nosferatu, a movie that the filmmaker behind The VVitch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman has been wanting to make for thirty years.
Nosferatu stars Timothy Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp as Thomas and Ellen Hutter, a newly-married couple living in a small German town in 1838, whose marriage is put to the test when he’s assigned to travel to Transylvania to get the mysterious Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) to sign the deeds to his new home. Once there, Thomas is pulled into the web of the nefarious vampirous royal, who has also set his sights on Ellen. This leads to some of the Hutter’s worst nightmares as Orlok makes his way to Germany, and their nightmares continue to increase.
Eggers’ Nosferatu also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney, and it opens nationwide on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
You can watch Matt and Ed fight it out over whether Eggers’ reworking of the classic vampire tale offers anything new or worth paying to see in theaters in the video above.
