Blige’s battles with abuse, depression and addiction that forged a profound and enduring connection with millions of fans around the globe.
This is exactly the heart of Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth’s documentary. By exploring the struggle and pain of the titular character, who grew up in Schlobohm Houses with no hopes and was plunged into a world of stardom, viewers witness Mary J. Blige’s demons and blessings that inspired her work. Her road to healing is inspirational for the fans who look up to her, as she explains that self-accomplishment has to first be acquired as a state of mind. “Success comes when you are successful inside,” she says. It is striking also to see how the triumphant music star shares the insecurities of her youth and how determining it was to have those around her believing in her talents more than she did.
The film includes interviews with longtime collaborator Sean “Diddy” Combs, actress Taraji P. Henson, legendary music executive Andre Harrell, long-time friend Jimmy Iovine, fellow artists Method Man, Nas and Alicia Keys, and show-business impresario and philanthropist Tyler Perry. There are also intimate moments with the singer’s family and her collaborators, all of which depict a stirring description of a powerful, fearless woman who dared to pursue her dreams whilst inspiring others to do the same.
This storytelling intertwines with a poetically compassionate animation, depicting the chronicles of Mary J. Blige’s frame of mind. The emotional chronicle echoes with the pain of a generation, that is encapsulated in her songs and that made her fandom connect with her so strongly throughout the years. People associate with Mary J. Blige personally through her music, to such intensity, that it is impressive to listen to the story of a fan who did not commit suicide because he felt the strength to confront his biggest fears while listening to Blige’s songs.
The interior journey traversed by Roth’s documentary, explores also the way hardships in relationships led Mary J. Blige down a rabbit hole of drug and alcohol dependance. The need of validation through romance has been one of the major causes of her insecurity. But her path to self-love becomes an eloquent example of how to overcome the avalanche of depression, and acquire a fortitude that cannot be compromised.
Mary J. Blige describes her rebirth as an osmotic process: the positive energy she projected towards her fans, that they requited, has been determining. The curative power of music is thus homaged, as Mary J. Blige further celebrates in the documentary the 25th anniversary of her most influential work by performing the album live for the first time.
Mary J. Blige’s My Life is available on Amazon Prime Video from June 25th, 2021.
