“Torn between two lovers feeling like a fool, loving both of you is breaking all the rules” — as sang by American Singer Mary MacGregor is the main premise of the film. ”One True Loves. ” Emma (Philippa Soo) at a certain point in this movie had to choose between the equally handsome and kind hearted gentlemen, her past – Jesse ( Luke Bracey ) and Sam her present ( Simu Liu ).
You probably are intrigued by now if it’s about infidelity or maybe about modern polyamory.
Our Heroin had a hardest choice being pulled like a rope.
This was in addition to her dealing with depression and grief. Film Critic Roger Ebert has a quote that says, “Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions never lie to you.” Emma definitely had to decide if it’s possible to love two people at the same time or maybe she had to decide and choose.
This dramatic film is actually a Romantic Comedy that I certainly salute for showing diversity in casting. I got excited about watching this film as it has two of the hottest Asian American and Canadian – Actors. The Female Romantic Lead is Chinese American Actress Philippa Soo, a Julliard graduate, Multi Awarded Stage Actress who originated the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in “Hamilton” (2015 – 2016), Amelie Pouilan in “Amelie” (2017), Cinderella in “Into The Woods” (2022) and Guenevere in “Camelot” (2023) all on Broadway.
The male lead is Chinese born, Canadian actor – Simu Liu who is known as the Lead in Marvel’s “Shang Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings.” (2021). He is also known for his role as the sexy ditsy brother in the Canadian TV Show “Kim’s Convenience” (2016 – 2021). Philippa and Simu are very effective in their characters showing us their relationship in a rollercoaster ride. It did help that they are two of the most beautiful actor and actress in Hollywood right now. Perfect for Rom-Com. But they are effective because they attack their roles in such a truthful and vulnerable way. Kudos!
As an Asian American Actor myself. I am thrilled to see my fellow Asians on the big screen as the main lead, so much like the triumph of the Multi Awarded All Asian Cast American Film “Everything Everywhere All At Once. ” I was telling myself wow the Asian Wave is on and it’s really happening….the success of Ali Wong’s “Beef” on Netflix and now this film ! Yahoo ! I hope Hollywood and even Indie Films would see the viability of us Asians as onscreen lead actors. I am really excited about this.
Let’s not forget the raw performance of equally handsome and hunkish Australian actor -Luke Bracey (Jesse) who has been acting on TV since 2009 and on Films in 2011.
Jesse is the Pandora’s Box in Emma’s life that suddenly is let out of the shoe box and causes all this dilemma. Luke has an unforgettable – great screen presence. By the way, let’s not forget about the sister character in the film that has the funniest one liners and is a revelation – Chinese American Michaela Conlin (Marie). Mark my word, watch out for this name. She will do well in Hollywood as I predicted about actress Gemma Chan from her supporting role in “Crazy Rich Asian.”
This film shows how a solid family structure that supports each can make a difference in a person’s life. A person can only deal with grief and depression if one has a shoulder to cry on or a lending ear to talk to. But it’s still up to the person to choose from spiraling down to insanity or moving on and returning back to life.
“One True Loves” is definitely part of the Asian Wave. The film is a Romantic Comedy that is intriguing, entertaining and endearing.
