Matthew Schuchman

In the early 90s, while at the video store with his friends who wanted to rent Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, Matthew asked the clerk if they had any copies of Naked Lunch available. A film buff from an early age, he would turn his fascination into his own review site in 2010; Movie Review from Gene Shalit’s Moustache. From there, he provided his voice to such publications as Den of Geek, Coming Soon, and Verbicide magazine as a film reviewer and talent interviewer.

The Naked Gun

Nothing was better than a classic Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker comedy. From The Kentucky Fried Movie, to Top Secret and onward, they were masters of irreverent comedy. When they went and tried to bring that comedy to TV, it didn’t work. As they would explain, you needed to pay attention to get the jokes. And families easting dinner whilst Police Squad was airing, weren’t really paying attention. Yet, they were able to turn that idea into franchise gold with, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

With three mainline films they took their good will from the success of Airplane and spun it into gold. Now, just 30 over 30 years since the last entry, Akiva Schaffer and his team are resurrecting the franchise. Do they have what it takes to bring back a form of comedy that has been floundering for so long? Surprisingly, they do.
