It was break the internet moment, when the entire world reacted to the “Barbie” teaser trailer in November, the first footage of Margot Robbie in the titular role was all that anyone could talk about, the teaser was only 75 seconds long, but it was bold, brilliant move to get the permission to use the reference to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” opened and cutting to Robbie’s Barbie standing 100 feet tall, an earth-shattering new symbol of aspirational womanhood for young girls.
The film has Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as one iteration of the iconic Barbie and Ken, but it also features an expansive cast of 10 other Barbies and four more Kens, including Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu and Ritu Arya.
After the release of the first full-length trailer, some viewers have already found several potential things hidden in the two-minute clip. The pink gingham dress Barbie—played by Margot —is seen wearing in the teaser bears a striking resemblance to the iconic blue gingham frock Dorothy sports in the 1939 cinema classic, and you’ll notice that every poster features a different Wizard of Oz character.
Plus, the “Wizard of Oz” is listed on the marquee. Blink and you might miss it, but it’s there.
However, that trailer really didn’t give us any idea of what Barbie would Actually be about. With Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach penning the script, Barbie was sure to be sharp-tongued.
Alongside Robbie and Gosling, “Barbie” is set to feature performances from Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kate Mckinnon, Michael Cera, Dua Lipa.
We’ll be looking forward to having a good time when “Barbie” hits theaters July 21.
