“Bugonia” is a doom-laden black comedy-thriller directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, which received a six-minute standing ovation following its world premiere on Venice International Film Festival at the Sala Grande cinema in the Italian city. As the applause dwindled, Lanthimos, Stone, and co-stars Jessie Plemons and Aidan Delbis gathered together on the theater’s balcony and bowed to the crowd in unison.
“Bugonia” finds Stone, starring alongside with Jesse Plemons and fellow cast members Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. A remake of Korean director Jang Joon Hwan’s 2001 cult classic Save the Green Planet!, Lanthimos’s film follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
Lanthimos and his muse have again retained their critically acclaimed Poor Things, and now the Focus Features release is one of the most anticipated titles on the Lido.
The film won four Oscars, with Stone winning second best actress and best achievement in production design, costume design, makeup, hairstyling, and costume design for Holly Waddington, and makeup and hairstyling for Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Westo.
“Begonia” will release on October 31st.
