A fetish filmmaker, Nicolas Winding Refn, has established his name through the neon-tinged set films like “Drive” and “The Neon Demon.” But initially Danish director rose to fame by capturing the criminal underground of Copenhagen in the “Pusher” trilogy. When the pandemic prevented him from traveling outside his home country to work, he returned to Copenhagen with a new visual story.
Copenhagen Cowboy is a thrill-inducing, neon-drenched noir series set across six episodes which follows enigmatic young heroine, Miu. After a lifetime of servitude and on the verge of a new beginning, she traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld.
Searching for justice and enacting vengeance, she encounters her nemesis, Rakel, as they embark on an odyssey through the natural and the supernatural.
The past ultimately transforms and defines their future, as the two women discover they are not alone, they are many.
Copenhagen Cowboy was filmed in Denmark and is composed of six episodes. The series stars Angela Bundalovic, Lola Corfixen and Zlatko Buric. Additional cast includes Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen and Mads Brügger among others.
Nicolas Winding Refn, creator: “With Copenhagen Cowboy, I am returning to my past to shape my future by creating a series, an expansion of my constantly evolving alter-egos, now in the form of my young heroine, Miu. Collaborating with Netflix and bringing this show to life has been an absolutely wonderful experience on all levels. I not only perceive them as my partners with many future adventures to come, but also as my friends.
The new term has been born: Netflix Winding Refn.”
Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, director Nordic Original Series at Netflix: “We are absolutely thrilled to finally be able to announce that we have partnered up with Nicolas Winding Refn, one of Denmark’s most acclaimed filmmakers, and are bringing him back to Denmark to produce a local Danish show after more than 15 years abroad. Nicolas is a creative force and is such a fascinating and unpredictable filmmaker. We can’t wait to bring Copenhagen Cowboy to the world.”
Refn’s Netflix original series, slated to world premiere Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival.
