Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are facing off against police officers, criminals and each other in their latest onscreen collaboration, The Rip. In honor of the upcoming release of the Oscar-winning friends’ new action thriller, earlier today Netflix released the official trailer for the project.
Joe Carnahan directed the throwback crime film, which stars the longtime friends. The Grey helmer also wrote the script for The Rip, drawing inspiration from true events. He created the movie’s story with Michael McGrale.
In The Rip, Miami cops turn on each other after finding $20 million in a derelict stash house. As a result, outside forces enter the mix and struggle to determine who to trust.
The trailer features Affleck and Damon as they try to count the haul without attracting attention over the course of one tense, paranoid night. Other interested parties close in on the house to seize the money, threatening their operation and forcing them to face ethical challenges.
In addition to Affleck and Damon, the movie also stars Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another). They’re also joined by Sasha Calle (The Flash), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), Scott Adkins and Kyle Chandler. Yeun and Taylor play younger cops in the upcoming film. Calle, meanwhile, plays a femme fatale who gets mixed up with the swaggering team of cops when she’s present at the raid.
The Rip is a gritty, throwback action thriller. It’s drawing comparison to stunt-heavy heist films like The Fast and the Furious and corrupt cop movies like Training Day.
The Rip marks the first collaboration between Netflix and Affleck and Damon’s production company, Artists Equity. Besides the two friends, Dani Bernfeld and Luciana Damon also served as producers on the thriller. The feature’s executive producers are Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe for Artists Equity.
Netflix will release The Rip worldwide on January 16.
