An unofficial biopic about celebrated French Canadian pop singer, Célion Dion, titled Aline, is set to play out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. In honor of the news of the movie’s screening at the French festival next month, UniFrance, an organization that promotes French cinema, is also highlighting the trailer for the drama.

Besides making headlines for screening at Cannes this summer, Aline is also generating buzz for being inspired by the singer’s life, as well as using her acclaimed songs. However, the biopic wasn’t allowed to use her real name

While Aline is scheduled to screen at Cannes this year, it was released in France last November, a month after its trailer was initially released. At the time of the trailer’s premiere, Gaumont Distribution was in negotiations to secure a deal to release the drama in the U.S.

Filmmaker Valérie Lemercier co-wrote, directed and played the title character in Aline. The movie chronicles the real life five-time Grammy Award-winning musician’s personal relationship with her much-older manager-turned-husband, René Angélil, with whom she had three children. The biopic makes the romance between Dion and her spouse, who were married for 22 years until his death in 2016, a central focal point in its plot.

Quebec, late 1960s, Sylvette and Anglomard welcome their 14th child: Aline. In the Dieu family, music reigns supreme, and when Aline grows up, she and her family discover that she has a golden voice. When he hears that voice, music producer Guy-Claude has just one thing in mind … to make Aline the greatest singer in the world. Supported by her family and guided by the experience and then the budding love of Guy-Claude, the singer and manager will together write the pages of an extraordinary destiny.
