‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Director Titus Kaphar on His Emotional Drama (Video Interview)

Titus Kaphar has achieved quite a few high points as one of the more successful contemporary fine artists, but with Exhibiting Forgiveness, he makes his foray into feature filmmaking. The drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, and it made enough of an impact that it was then programmed as part of this year’s New Directors/New Films at Film at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art (aka MOMA)

The film stars André Holland (Moonlight) as artist Tarrell, whose estranged father La’Ron (played by theater vet John Earl Jelks) returns into his life after living on the streets for years, forcing the painter to decide whether he can reconcile with his father’s abusive behavior decades earlier. La’Ron’s return also troubles Tarrel’s wife (Andra Day) and ailing mother (Aunjanue Ellis Taylor).

Cinema Daily US spoke with the filmmaker over Zoom last week, firstly about his decision to make Exhibiting Forgiveness, a project that began as a documentary, casting Jelks over bigger known stars and teaching Holland how to paint in order to create more accuracy in his role. Kaphar also spoke about how Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance got involved as a producer, along with Stephanie Allain.

Exhibiting Forgiveness will open nationwide on Friday, October 18, and check back for our interviews with some of his cast very soon.
