Kevin Costner’s 1995 sci-fi drama, Waterworld, is getting a sequel series.“We’re going to do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie,” producer John Davis told Collider.
“We’re not 100 percent sure on the approach to the show.
But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now,” added John Fox, Davis’ producing partner. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the project is in early development at Universal Content Productions where the team has a first-look deal.
It is unclear whether Costner, who has been starring in the Paramount Network’s western Yellowstone in recent years, will be part of the Waterworld follow-up. Davis and Fox were producers on the post-apocalyptic movie about a sailor (Costner) who can breathe underwater and joins with other survivors to try to find dry land in a world where the polar ice caps have melted and water covers nearly every surface.
The critically panned film had an enormous budget for its time, $175 million, but suffered setbacks because of a hurricane. Co-starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Tina Majorino, it earned $264 million at the global box office and became a hit as a home-entertainment staple.
10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is attached to helm the small-screen sequel series. No casting has been set yet, but Dark Horizons reported the show will follow characters introduced in the film more than 20 years ago.
