Over the course of cinematic history, most films about love or romance have featured a man and a woman. While there are a number of examples of same-sex relationships anchoring such movies, they are much rarer and often emphasize the triumphant nature of what many deem unconventional. It’s refreshing, therefore, to find Crush, where being queer isn’t seen as unusual or notable in any way, and it’s just another part of the story.
Auliʻi Cravalho and Rowan Blanchard star as two-thirds of a love triangle in Hulu’s new romantic comedy Crush. I had the chance to speak with Cravalho and Blanchard about their own cinematic influences, what they connected to most about this project, and the appeal of making a movie that pays no particular attention to the gender or sexual orientation of its principal characters.

Film summary:
When an aspiring young artist, Paige (Rowan Blanchard), is forced to join her high school track team, she uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl (Isabella Ferreira) she’s been harboring a long-time crush on. But she soon finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate (Auliʻi Cravalho) and discovers what real love feels like.
