Although Tony Goldwyn may be better known to people for his acting roles in movies like Ghost and on the TV series, Scandal, he’s also been directing since making A Walk on the Moon in 1999. His new dramedy Ezra, hitting theaters nationwide on May 31, is Goldwyn’s first theatrical feature since Conviction in 2010.
It stars Bobby Cannavale as stand-up comedian Max, whose autistic son Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald) is having problems at school, but when Max’s agent (Whoopi Goldberg) gets him an audition for the “Jimmy Kimmel Show,” Max takes Ezra on a cross-country road trip to Hollywood, much to the concern of his ex-wife (Rose Byrne) and father (Robert De Niro) who have become accustomed to him acting irresponsibly. It’s a movie that has moments of humor and comedy but also takes a poignant and emotional look at what it’s like to parent someone on the spectrum.
In an exclusive video interview, Cinema Daily US spoke with Goldwyn about deciding to direct his good friend Tony Spiridakis’ personal screenplay, casting Cannavale and his real-life wife Byrne, as well as finding the talented William A. Fitzgerald for the title role.
