Cherishing the nostalgia and glory of adolescence is a common and essential part of many young adults’ coming-of-age journey. However, it can ultimately take a meaningful event to vitalize their maturity and growth. Not only is that the case for the arc of actor Fred Hechinger’s protagonist in the upcoming horror comedy, Hell of Summer, but also for the careers of its filmmakers, Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard.
The project marks the feature film writing and directorial debuts of the duo, who have garnered success in the horror genre. Bryk and Wolfhard, the latter of whom starred in Stranger Things and the It movies early in his career, connected while working as performers on the set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
The filmmakers also served as producers on Hell of Summer with Jason Bateman and Hechinger. Besides the latter, as well as Bryk and Wolfhard, the new horror comedy also stars Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai and Pardis Saremi.
Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.
Neon will release Hell of a Summer exclusively in theaters on April 4, 2025. To help promote the movie’s distribution, Bryk and Wolfhard, and Quinn, Woon-A-Tai and Saremi, generously took the time recently to talk about scribing, helming and starring in the movie during two respective exclusive interviews over Zoom.
