If you don’t live in Charlotte, North Carolina, you may not have heard of Jeffrey Manchester, the egregious robber who broke into 45 McDonald’s establishments between 1998 and 2000 by breaking through their roofs, earning him the moniker of “Roofman.” He was eventually caught, but he figured out a clever way to escape from jail before holing up in a Toys R Us store for many months in a way that he wouldn’t be discovered for many months. Manchester’s story eventually captured the interest of filmmaker Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) and actor Channing Tatum. Together, they made the film Roofman, telling Manchester’s amazing story of how he escaped from prison and managed to evade the law for months.
Roofman is a terrific vehicle for Tatum’s many talents, surrounding him with a fantastic cast that includes Oscar nominees Kirsten Dunst and Lakeith Stanfield, four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage, Emmy nominee Juno Temple, Ben Mendelsohn, Uzo Aduba, and more. This is a movie that actually tells Manchester’s true story as accurately as possible while also delivering exactly what the movie’s trailer promises.
Cinema Daily US had a chance to speak with Cianfrance about the making of the movie and how he’s going to try to have his next movie out sooner rather than later. You can watch that interview in the video player above.
