Comedy definitely seems to be making a comeback this year, or at least it’s trying to. Going by the recent The Naked Gun and Covino and Marvin’s Splitsville, people are going back to movie theaters, because they want to laugh.
Jay Duplass was at the forefront of indie comedy going back to his 2005 film, The Puffy Chair, made with his brother and long-time collaborator Mark Duplass. With his new comedy, The Baltimorons, he has a new collaborator in sketch and improv comic MIchael Strassner. In the Christmas Eve comedy, Strassner plays Cliff, a recently sober and soon-to-be-married former comic, who loses a tooth in an accident and has to turn to a friendly dentist named Didi, played by Liz Larsen, who just happens to be working on Christmas Eve. After Cliff’s car gets towed, this encounter turns into an unlikely camaraderie as Cliff and Didi end up spending the rest of the night together roaming around Baltimore.
Anyone who has seen Duplass’ earlier films should know to expect The Baltimorons to combine a similar degree of warmth and hilarity, as Strassner and Larsen’s night goes from one funny situation to the next. It’s a true crowdpleaser of a film.
