Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has been shocking and surprising moviegoers for many decades, most notably going back to his 1999 blockbuster, The Sixth Sense, and its follow-ups, Unbreakable and Signs.
The filmmaker’s latest high-concept thriller, Trap, stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a father bringing his daughter Riley to a concert by pop star Lady Raven (played by his daughter Saleka, who also wrote over a dozen original songs for the movie). Once there, Cooper learns that the entire concert is an elaborate trap by the FBI to catch a vicious serial killer who has left a trail of bodies behind him.
Whether Cooper is actually that serial killer or not is something you’ll have to wait to see the movie, but like with many of Shyamalan’s films, there are plenty of shocks and surprises, which the filmmaker and studio are clearly trying to keep under wraps even as the movie is days from being released.
Cinema Daily US spoke with Shyamalan about tackling serial killers in his latest movie, taking over a stadium in Canada for three months, and collaborating with his daughter Saleka on the film’s music and her bigger role in the story. We also discussed casting Disney legend Hayley Mills as a serial killer profiler and making The Watchers with his other daughter, Ishana, who CDUS spoke to a few months back for that film.
