Angelina Jolie Bares Her Soul in ‘Vogue’ Interview, Launches Fashion Brand

In an introspective cover story in Vogue magazine this month, Angelina Jolie reveals why she has stepped away from films for the past decade, a period of transition for the 48-year-old Oscar winner.

“I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade,” she confessed.

Jolie is in the midst of launching Atelier Jolie, a new fashion brand that aims to empower women while communicating her own feelings about an intensely difficult period in her life after her divorce from Brad Pitt.

“Sometimes the way you dress says, ‘Don’t mess with me — I’ve got my armor on,’” she added.

“But I want a woman to feel safe enough that she can be soft.

After I went through something where I was hurt, I had a therapist ask if I would try wearing a flowing garment. Sounds silly, but I assumed that pants and boots projected a ‘tougher’ look, a stronger me. But was I strong enough to be soft?

At the time, no. I felt vulnerable. Now I wonder if I don’t know what my style is because I’m still understanding who I am at 48. I guess I’m in transition as a person.”

Referring to her acting career, Jolie admitted that, in the interest of healing and self-care, she began to cut back on her involvement in films around 2017 by “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.” Her most recent starring roles have been in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Those Who Wish Me Dead. She also appeared in a supporting role in Marvel’s Eternals and in the fantasy film Come Away.

During this transitional period, Jolie also directed the dramatic picture First They Killed My Father, which was well received by the critics. She is in the midst of producing a musical adaptation of The Outsiders for a stage production, assisted by her teenaged daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.

Jolie, who has six children ranging in age from 15 to 22, filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in September of 2016. While she does not mention Pitt by name in her Vogue interview, it’s apparent that her breakup with him was a major factor in her transformation.

“I was 26 when I became a mother,” she told Vogue. My entire life changed. Having children saved me — and taught me to be in this world differently. I think, recently, I would’ve gone under in a much darker way had I not wanted to live for them. They’re better than me, because you want your children to be.”
