‘Aquaman’ Director James Wan ‘On the Mend’ After Hospitalization

Director James Wan is now “on the mend” after a medical emergency that sent him to a Los Angeles hospital this week.

According to a statement issued by Wan’s wife Ingrid Bisu, the 46-year-old director had undergone “an extremely rough and scary couple of days and nights” but is now recovering.

Her statement continued: “You never want to rush to the ER in the middle of the night and then have to stay in the hospital. Cedars Sinai is truly the best!!

The best doctors, nurses, technicians, just the most wonderful people. James is safe now and on the mend.” Wan himself posted a message that he was grateful for the care he was receiving from hospital staff.

No further information was revealed about the cause of the hospitalization.

Wan had been working on the forthcoming DC Universe release Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, starring Jason Momoa. The original shooting was completed by January 2022, but the film underwent several reshoots, and its release date has been changed several times. Though it’s currently scheduled to hit the screens on December 20, it’s believed that the Hollywood writers’ strike could delay its debut even further.

Over the past year or so, Wan has also worked on several other films, including M3GAN, Saw X, The Nun II, and Insidious: The Red Door.

The prolific director was born in Malaysia and emigrated to Australia as a child. He recently commented on the current popularity of the horror genre, telling Movieweb: “I think a lot of it is attributed to how audiences are changing. Younger audiences really gravitate to the horror genre. It’s always been popular, and it’s always been around, but what I discovered with The Conjuring is if you make a movie people really want to see and it connects with people, it doesn’t matter what time of the year you release it. I do think there is an art to releasing a film, but I really think the landscape of cinema has shifted so much in recent years that you can release a horror film in the summer and compete with the big blockbuster films.
