The BAFTA Film Awards were held at the Royal Festival Hall in London yesterday, during which the German film, All Quiet on the Western Front, was the sweeping victor. The epic anti-war movie, which is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, won seven awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Edward Berger.
“We’ve been blessed with so many nominations and winning this is just incredible,” All Quiet on the Western Front‘s producer, Malte Grunert, said on stage.
The Banshees of Inisherin was also a favorite at the BAFTA ceremony. The black comedy, which was written, helmed and co-produced by Martin McDonagh, won both the Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress trophies, as well as Best Original Screenplay.
Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is a favorite heading into next month’s Oscar ceremony, was largely snubbed during the BAFTA event. It was only honored with one award, for Best Editing.
Heading into the BAFTA awards ceremony yesterday, All Quiet on the Western Front led with 14 nominations. It was followed by ten nominations each for The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Elvis rounded out the pack of top contenders with nine nominations.
The BAFTAs also garnered headlines this year for another reason, which isn’t as celebratory: in the wake of the first trending #BAFTAsSoWhite hashtag eight years ago, the association made a pledge to review its nominations process.
As recently as 2020, BAFTA chairman Krishnendu Majumdar committed to producing “meaningful and sustainable progress” to move towards creating a more inclusive and diverse awards ceremony.
The BAFTA’s groundbreaking diversity review made a sweeping number of changes that have incorporated jury involvement in the performance and directing categories to ensure a diverse group of nominees. But during yesterday’s ceremony, the results seemed as though the association was upholding its commitment to honoring diversity.
2022 featured a variety of work that was worth rewarding, include helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood’s war epic, The Woman King, which featured acclaimed performances from Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch and Sheila Atim. Director Chinonye Chukwu’s biographical drama Till was driven by a celebrated performance from Danielle Deadwyler.
Writer-helmers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All At Once features a renowned ensemble cast of that includes Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Harry Shum Jr. and James Hong. So to not have a single winner of color at the BAFTA ceremony after such a year shows that the association didn’t keep its promise of honoring diverse winners this year.
