Hikers have discovered human remains around Mt. Baldy, California, fueling speculation that that they may belong to British-born actor Julian Sands, who disappeared there on a hiking trip in January.

m., civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness. Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene. The decedent was transported to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification.

Just a day earlier, Sands’s family announced they were “deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.” They added, “We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer,”
The search for the missing actor had been suspended temporarily this spring due to adverse weather conditions. More than 10 feet of snow still covers part of the wilderness area around the mountain. The sheriffs confirmed that the efforts had resumed during the past week, involving more than 80 personnel, both staff and volunteers whowere assisted by helicopters and drones. The 11,000-foot-high Mt. Baldy is in the San Gabriel Mountains about 50 miles northeast of Sands’s home in north Hollywood.

The 65-year-old actor, a seasoned hiker and outdoorsman, was described by his acting colleague John Malkovich as an “inveterate mountain climber/hiker” who was “was always tramping off to Kilimanjaro, or Antarctica, or the Andes, or the Alps.”
Sands was acclaimed for his roles in both film and television, having starred in the 1985 film A Room With a View. He also appeared in Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, and Warlock.
