A star-studded cast is being assembled for The Fall Guy, which Universal is making based on the acclaimed 1980s TV adventure series. Among the stars who have already rehearsing their lines for the upcoming flick are Emily Blunt, Ryan Gosling, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” breakout actress Stephanie Hsu. The film is being directed by David Leitch, who’d recently been lauded for his work on Bullet Train. Scriptwriter will be Drew Pearce.
Unlike the original show that starred Lee Majors, the new film will focus on a bedraggled stuntman, played by Gosling, who is doing a new movie with a star he’d once doubled for but who now has gone missing. Taylor-Johnson will be playing that star, and Blunt will play the role of a makeup artist who has had romantic liaisons with the stuntman.
Taylor-Johnson last played opposite Brad Pitt in Bullet Train; he’s also recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Matthew Vaughn’s The King’s Man. The actor’s next film will be the title role in Sony’s Kraven the Hustler, based on a Spider-Man villain, to be released in October of 2023.
Ryan Gosling has won two Oscar nominations for Best Actor, one for Half Nelson (2006) and the other for La La Land (2016). He’s also appeared in such films as First Man, The Big Short, Blade Runner 2049, and Crazy. Stupid, Love.
Emily Blunt’s film credits include the sci-fi releases The Adjustment Bureau, Looper, and Edge of Tomorrow, as well as the musicals Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. She’s also appeared in a number of crime and adventure movies, including Sicario, The Girl on the Train, A Quiet Place, and Jungle Cruise. She is scheduled to appear in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and in David Yates’s Netflix drama, Pain Hustlers.
Hsu, who had recently played Michelle Yeoh’s rebellious daughter in Everything Everywhere All at Once, is being cast as the star’s assistant in The Fall Guy. She’d also appeared in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, winning herself and the cast a 2020 SAG Award for best ensemble in a comedy series. She also has a leading role in a yet-untitled Adele Lim comedy being made for Lionsgate and will appear in Disney+’s American Born Chinese.
The Fall Guy is slated for release in March, 2024.
