Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are partnering to adapt the popular video game Ghost of Tsushima for the big screen, as reported by IGN. John Wick director Chad Stahelski is on board to bring the story of samurai warrior Jin Sakai and his fight to liberate Tsushima to cinema audiences. Alex Young and Jason Spitz will produce under the umbrella of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Peter Kang from Sucker Punch Productions will serve as a supervisor and executive producer.
Ghost of Tsushima, which was developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, has done very well in the video game world, selling over 6.5 million copies since it was first released in July 2020 and more than 2.
4 million in just its first three days. It contended for numerous Game Awards including Game of the Year. The samurai movie influences on the game make it a logical contender for a film adaptation. This game-to-movie news follows reports of Uncharted, another coproduction from Sony and PlayStation, set for February 11th, 2022, and PlayStation working with the TV wing of Sony to bring The End of Us to HBO.
Stahelski next returns to the helm of the latest installment of the John Wick franchise, albeit without writer Derek Kolstad, despite his work on the first three films and as screenwriter of a similarly-themed new theatrical release week, Nobody. The fourth entry in the series is due sometime in 2022, and Stahelski has proven his ability to bring energizing action to an eager audience with a strong lead character at the center.
The more than $600 million those films have brought in worldwide make him an obvious choice to take on this big project.
