HBO’s True Detective: Night Country is being delayed until January 2024, probably due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes, though no reason has been officially given. The fourth installment in the crime anthology series starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis was originally slated to debut earlier in 2023. The series, which features different sets of investigators each year, is directed by Issa López, who also serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Set in the remote and rugged country around Ennis, Alaska, the upcoming Night Country installment narrates the mysterious disappearance of the eight men who operate an Arctic research station. Two detectives, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are assigned to investigate the case during the long winter darkness. According to the official synopsis for the show, “To solve the case, [the two women] will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Foster is a veteran actor who had earlier won an Oscar for her performance in The Silence of the Lambs. Reis, originally a professional boxer, made her screen debut in the 2021 thriller Catch the Fair One. Director Issa López came to prominence as the director of the horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid. The Mexican-born López had also scripted eleven Spanish-language films, four of which she directed herself.



Other cast members appearing in True Detective: Night Country include Finn Bennett, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, Isabella Star Lablanc, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Joel D. Montgrand, and Fiona Shaw.

Originally premiering on HBO in 2014, the True Detective series was created by Nic Pizzolatto.  Among the stars who appeared in the series over the past decade have been Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Rachel McAdams, and Matthew McConaughey.

Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame is listed as executive producer of the upcoming installment.
