Squid Game is returning to Netflix, with its second season premiere set to debut on December 26.
Directed, written, and produced by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Firstman Studio, the Korean drama debuted on September 17, 2021 and became the first Netflix series to garner 100 million members at the time of its launch, accumulating more than 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days. It was nominated for 14 Emmys and won six of them, including for best director, actor, and guest actress. Hwang Dong-hyuk is also known for his work on films including The Fortress, Miss Granny, and Silenced.
The announcement of the new season was made via a letter posted by Hwang, who wrote: “It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place. On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.’ It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years as well’.”
Hwang added: “Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”
Season 1 of Squid Game focused on a group of 456 players who accept an invitation to compete in children’s games on a remote island in hopes of winning 456 billion won. In Season 2, viewers will follow one of the players, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), after his “jaw-dropping decisions” at the end of the first season. He will be seen jettisoning his plans to travel to the United States as he vows to wreak revenge on his adversaries. In the upcoming episodes, Seong will be joined by the game’s leader, Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and its Recruiter (Gong Yoo), as well as the detective Hwang jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon).
The official synopsis for Season 2 puts it this way: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
Season 3 has reportedly already been filmed, indicating that Netflix will likely release it in 2025, not long after the conclusion of Season 2. The third season will reportedly be its last.
