James Gunn announced on Instagram that the sophomore entry in his Superman Saga, Man of Tomorrow, will premiere in theaters on July 9, 2027. The filmmaker made the announcement after he appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio and said “We’re starting to shoot in April 2026 or so.”
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the sequel after its predecessor, Superman (2025), debuted in theaters on July 11. It went on to earn= almost $615 million at the global box office. It’s total makes it the year’s top-grossing comic book movie.
Gunn accompanied his announcement on social media with a drawing by DC head Jim Lee. The pictures features Lex Luthor in a green and purple mech suit. Superman is leaning against him with a slight smile on his face as he holds a screwdriver.
Lex’s armored Warsuit, which is designed to battle Superman, has been seen for decades in the comics. However, the franchise’s villain has never worn the suit in a live-action adaptation.
In the DC comics, Lex created the Warsuit in order to match Superman’s strength and abilities. He’ll use the suit to be on the same level as his enemy for whatever threat they’re forced to fight together.
While appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn shared Man of Tomorrow is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” That suggests a few DC villains may make their DCU debut in the second screen adaptation.
Gunn, who wrote, directed and produced the series’ first film, has been teasing the follow-up for weeks. He has said that his next project won’t be a direct sequel to Superman. But Man of Tomorrow will feature characters audiences already know from the franchise’s hit first entry.
“It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult,” the filmmaker also said. He added: “I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”
Superman, which is the first entry of of the new DC Universe (DCU), introduced several characters who will appear in other installments of the shared universe. Gunn’s acclaimed live-action adaptation features not just Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex, but also Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). The project also includes such heroes as Guy Gardner (Nathon Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced).
Since the release of Superman and Peacemaker‘s sophomore season on HBO Max, there are several other movie and television projects already at various points of development. The next project set for release is filmmaker Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl, which will premiere on June 26, 2026. Gunn told Stern that the film’s lead actress, Millie Alcock, “might be the best bit of a casting I’ve ever done in my entire life. She is absolutely stunning in the movie.”
Gunn’s latest announcements come after he told The Hollywood Reporter last month at the premiere for the second season of Peacemaker: “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav personally announced last month that Gunn would return to pen and helm Man of Tomorrow.
