Watch your ears, Mickey. Your distant cousin Mighty Mouse is on his way.
Matt Lieberman has reportedly been tapped to write the script for a feature film adaptation of the iconic Mighty Mouse cartoon for Ryan Reynolds and his production company, Maximum Effort Productions. Paramount had previously announced, in 2019, that a live-action/animation hybrid movie starring the supermouse would be scripted by Jon and Eric Hoeber.
Lieberman, who wrote the Scoob! script, had earlier worked with Reynolds on Free Guy, a fantasy adventure that debuted in 2021, and also chalked up a respectable list of writing credits. In addition to Scoob! They include The Christmas Chronicles, Rumble, and The Addams Family. He also created Deadpool & Wolverine and appeared in Paramount’s If last summer.
Mighty Mouse appeared in dozens of short cartoons produced by Terrytoons that were shown on television and at Saturday afternoon movie matinees through the late 1980s. The original character, together with his feline nemesis, Oil Can Harry, was first seen in the 1940s as a satiric comment on the Superman comics. Mighty Mouse’s theme song, which began “Here he comes to save the day” quickly became a mantra of the Boomer generation.
Over the years, the supermouse character was featured in two animation revivals, one by Filmation Studios in 1979 and the second, which was titled Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures in 1987. The latter project was created by Terrytoons veteran Ralph Bakshi.
Maximum Deal also announced that it would be renewing its deal with Paramount through 2026. Among its other projects with the studio include Boy Band, Starter Villain, and Eloise. Brad Butler, the vice president of animated features at Paramount Animation, will be overseeing the Mighty Mouse production.
Lieberman, meanwhile, is represented by several entities: CAA, Lit Entertainment Group, Mortimer PR, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark.
